Mary Perkinson

Mary Perkinson is a Senior Life Member of the Society of Women Engineers and joined as a collegiate member in 1999.  She is currently serving on the Board of Directors as the Society's Director of Advocacy. As the Director of Advocacy, Mary leads the Outreach Committee and Government Relations and Public Policy in their missions to advocate for the inclusion and success of women, present and prospective, in engineering and technology.

Mary is an Engineering Manager II in Crane Engineering at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.  She supervises a multidiscipline engineering team responsible for new crane installations and overhaul projects for the 600-plus cranes at NNS with an annual budget of approximately $20 million/year. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

Mary is an active member of her technical community and has provided support to a number of engineering organizations including several VCU Boards and as a technical mentor for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) robotics teams.  Much of Mary’s focus in community outreach has been on sharing her excitement about engineering with students.  She has accomplished this through her work with SWE, VCU and FIRST robotics.  By volunteering with all three organizations, she has worked with all age groups to show students the possibilities of education and careers in the STEM.   Mary understands the importance of having outreach programs like SWE’s Invent It Build IT and FIRST and their part in creating the next generation of diverse leaders in STEM professions.
